Fatal crane incident in Vietnam

We can now confirm the fatal crawler crane overturn in Ba Ria, Vung Tau, in southern Vietnam on Sunday.

We understand that all five people that were immediately affected by the incident have now died. The crane a 1,250 tonne Terex CC6800 was operating on what looks like a relatively loose gravel platform, with no timbers or steel plates used to spread the loadings.

The scene this week

As it lifted a 360 tonne ship module into place at the port - operated by the PetroVietnam Technical Services Corp (PTSC) - the crane’s tracks sank into the ground and the machine went over, crushing the operator and four others. It is highly possible that the crane was travelling with the load at the time.

Three men, Dao Van Dung, 44, Nguyen Hong Nam, 20 and Nguyen DInh Chau, 31, were declared dead at the scene and we understand that the other two have since died of their injuries.

The ground gaveway completely

All five worked for Vung Tau-based FVS, which provides ship services and components. The company was working on the ship for the Saigon Offshore Fabrication & Engineering company.

A view from the other end suggests that this incident could have been even worse

This is the second fatal crane incident in Vietnam in as many months, in October two men in their 20s died at a highway construction job in Ho Chi Minh City when a crawler crane dropped its load.
