Balancing act

Sent in by a reader, who spotted someone standing on the top verticals of a three stage ladder in Hitchin, southern England.

Standing atop a precariously placed ladder

The person has balanced the ladder against two tree limbs and then managed, not only to climb all the way onto the top rung of the ladder, but then looked to gain a little extra height by moving up on the side rails! This in spite of the fact that the ladder is unstably placed, and they are around seven metres or so from the ground.

As if all this was not bad enough they appear to be cutting limbs from the tree, which can always fall the wrong way. How this stunt did not end in tears is anyone’s guess.

A closer look

Clearly one for our Death Wish series.

Have a safe weekend.

Arboriculture (tree work with mature trees) has been my profession since 1998 with six years apprenticeship prior to starting my business. I remeber my early days of climbing and taking risks similar to this. 21 years ago this June I forget to tie in my climbing saddle and thus fell 20' or 6 meters. My titanium hio repokacement has been wonderful but when I see an issue like this one my hip presence reminds me of the stupid things I did long ago trying to prove I could get the limbs cut.

There's no shortcuts, unfortunately, but the right skill and experience can accomplish absolutely anything.
