10m fall for crane erector

A tower crane erector fell around 10 metres from a man basket in San Francisco, California, on Saturday.

Reports we have received are however conflicting or confusing. We first heard that he was working from a man basket suspended from a truck crane, when a weld gave way on the one or two of the sling points, causing him to fall from the platform. A crew was removing a tower crane with the help of a large crawler crane, when the incident occurred. Although a subsequent photograph shows the top assembly of the Potain hammer head crane being broken down for loading, with the galvanised maintenance/inspection platform on the top of the tower crane shown on the floor.

The man was unconscious when paramedics arrived, he was rushed to a local trauma centre where his condition was described as critical, with numerous broken bones and possible internal injuries.

We will update this item when we learn more.

Hopefully this will make contractors think of using of aerial platforms, in situations that are viable, increase in inspection and recording on equipment. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
