Boom overturn at LV stadium

A large boom lift overturned at the new Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Thursday injuring the man operating it.

The platform, which looks like a 150ft Genie SX-150, is owned by United Rentals and looks relatively new. The man in the platform had been carrying out final touch up work on some panels on the side of the stadium. The cause of the overturn would seem to be down to some form of overloading, however the machine has a 340kg capacity and it is hard to see how touch up work would involve any heavy equipment or materials? It is also possible that the machine ran into the concrete barriers while driving at height?

The injured man was reported to be conscious and coherent before he was taken off to hospital. We have been unable to find out anything more on his condition. Hopefully he has had a lucky escape.

Eric Grenz, a vice president of the contractor Mortenson-McCarthy, said: “The worker was alert and taken to an area hospital for further evaluation. We are currently investigating the cause of the incident.”

The Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.

The bulk of the construction work was completed at the end of July, with only snagging work going on prior to a hand over later in the year. The 65,000 seat stadium will be the home of the Raiders and the University of Nevada Las Vegas’ Rebels football team.

Potentially very dangerous to recover this. Could upright itself causing more damage. One solution would be to use a crane attached to the axles of the air-bourne wheels, take the strain, then chop the boom off where it is bent then lower the superstructure down to the ground.
