1,000 tonne test for 800 tonner

Liebherr has completed a physical 1,000 tonne overload test for a new 800 tonne boom head section, ballast trailer and hook block on its 800 tonne LR 1800-1 crawler crane. The crane is capable of lifting its maximum capacity at a radius of nine metres with a 57 metre boom.

For the test lift the crane was set up with 70 tonnes of central ballast, 170 tonnes of main superstructure ballast and 228 tonnes of derrick ballast on a 33 metre derrick boom and ballast trailer. The test could also have been carried out with a suspended ballast, but the ballast trailer is a new option and was therefore also on test.

All 10 units of the LR 1800-1.0 delivered so far - to customers in Europe, North America and Asia - feature the standard 650 tonne ‘S’ boom head.

Product manager Jens Könneker said: “The expression ‘Maximum performance is all in the head’, is not only relevant to sport, as was demonstrated on the Ehingen test bed, when a 1,000 tonne test load was suspended from the hook of the LR 1800-1.0. This incredible performance was made possible by the new 800 tonne heavy duty head. A new 1,000 tonne hook block also played a major role in the test and will also be used for the 1,000 tonne LR 11000.”

“The standard head is absolutely adequate for the vast majority of jobs. However, the LR 1800-1.0 is designed to produce its maximum lifting capacity in real world conditions and can hoist 800 tonnes with a nine metre radius on a 57 metre boom. That gives it plenty of scope for real applications. That is why we built the 800 tonne head, and now we have tested it as well.”
