Unloading fatality

A rental company employee has died after he was thrown from a platform in Massafra, near Taranto, southern Italy, yesterday.

The man, Luigi Aprile, 51, was unloading - or possibly loading - a Manitou 260 TJ+ from a truck in the Taranto yard of rental company Massucco T when the wheels on one side of the machine slipped off the ramps, catapulting him to the ground from a height of around eight to nine metres. He suffered catastrophic head injuries and died on the spot.

Tragically, he was not wearing a harness and lanyard, if had been he would still be alive.

Unloading machines such as this is one of the greatest causes of fatalities with aerial work platforms, and yet delivery drivers can regularly be seen unloading without harnesses.

An important issue not mentioned in this article but is always hidden when we unload and load is to have a spotter to guide the operator as we move about.
