A close call in the UK

A reader has sent us a photo of an incident that apparently took place somewhere in Dorset last week, in which a two axle All Terrain crane had lifted a holiday accommodation unit, over the rear, free on wheels.
The operator then seems to have started to slew the crane without setting his outriggers, although the photo shows the near rear beam partially extended.

The accommodation unit came to rest on the roof ridge of another cabin, as the crane teetered just off balance. From what we understand that operator was able to recover the situation, which was being watched by the operator of another crane, from which the photographs were seemingly taken.

The crane is rigged with all of its counterweight and has an excellent set of mats on board, but there are only as good as the operator’s diligence.

Maybe if the operator had used his mats (they appear to be loaded and stowed) the ground might not have gave way............

We’re nearby to this, which happened a while ago, and I have seen other photos that show what happened.

The built up ground subsided massively under the rear right outrigger of the 3 axle machine, causing it to tip and dump the caravan on top of the other unit.

The timbers you see under the outrigger beam were put there afterwards to try and prevent further tipping.

The photo must have been taken from the perspective of the crane either sent to take the weight off the first crane, or the one flying the man basket to attach the hook.

I find it rather rich that someone has stated the author can’t count yet they clearly are struggling with their grammar.

Looks like he had put sleepers under the Rigger beam to help the crane from sinking . Old trick but reduces your stability. Done well to recover

The incompetence/stupidity of some operators never ceases to amaze me.

How they are able to pass operator certification boggles my mind........!?!
