Horizon takes on charity run

Employees of UK access rental company Horizon Platforms will take part in the Equinox 24 hour run to raise funds for dementia sufferers and their families.

Two teams of six runners from the Wakefield and Warrington branches are currently training ahead of the challenge which takes place on 23rd and 24th September. The run is part of the company’s fundraising activities for this year’s partner charity, Dementia UK. Chosen as many members of the team have family and friends who have been affected by the neurological disorder which affects memory, cognitive ability and communications skills.

Dementia UK is one of the country’s leading dementia charities which offers specialist one to one support and expert advice for people living with dementia through their Admiral Nurses, who work hand in hand with families, helping them cope with the day to day challenges of the condition and face the future with more confidence and less fear.

Managing director Ben Hirst is taking part in the run alongside colleagues Matt Fray, Jack Archer, Emily Duggan, Leah Hartley and Ian Moorhouse. A second team of six runners includes Kelly Burgess, Ben Lunt, Jake Shelbourne, Todor Ilinov, James Kynaston and Amy Harrison. Both teams will run a continual relay around a 10 kilometre circuit, with each team member running up to four laps each.

Hirst said: “Many of us have first-hand experience of the compassionate care and support offered by the Admiral Nurses and we wanted to do our bit to help ensure their great work continues for years to come. Seeing a loved one slowly drift away can be agonising, and with the number of dementia sufferers on the increase in the UK, it’s vital that we do what we can to help.”

“The task is not something any of us are taking lightly. We’ve been in training for a few months now - both before and after work - and have gradually increased our pace and distance with each run. We’re now regularly running 10 kilometres before and after work on the same day, which is a huge challenge, but so is living with dementia. Our feet are sore but our spirits remain high, so if you can help by sponsoring our efforts, we’d be really grateful. Your support could make all the difference to sufferers and their families.”
