Two big cranes take a swim

Two mobile harbour cranes slipped off a delivery ship into the harbour at the Liebherr Maritime pier at the port of Rostock, Germany on Friday evening.

The ship, the Jumbo Vision had already loaded the two 154 tonne capacity Liebherr LHM550 cranes onto the ship, but shortly after placing the second crane, the boom of the ship crane struck the crane that it had just loaded causing the 439 tonne machine tip over the edge of the ship. The event caused the boat to list violently to one side sending the other crane into the water.

One of the men involved in the loading operation received minor injuries but was treated on site. Some oil or diesel fuel spillage was also reported but was contained with floating oil barriers. The boat also sustained some damage and will have to remain in port until repaired. Divers have been charting the exact position of the cranes, in order to allow them to be recovered as quickly as possible.

Liebherr confirmed that the incident had occurred at around 21:00 during positioning work on the second mobile crane on the ship. It added: "The ship tilted and both cranes slipped into the harbour basin. The two mobile cranes were for export and had been loaded onto the special ship with the ship cranes". It also said that it could not make any statements about exactly what happened, as an investigation is underway.

The LHM 550 has a 154 tonne capacity, a 54 metre jib/boom a maximum lift height of 45 metres and stands 36 metres high in transport configuration.
