Bungee crane collapse

The boom of a crane used for Bungee jumps in the Kaivopuisto park on the south side of Helsinki, Finland, suffered a major structural failure early yesterday morning, and came down into the sea.

The crane, a six axle Liebherr from the J.Helaakoski fleet - possibly its 350 tonne LTM 1350-6.1 - was rigged with ‘Y’ Guy Superlift and jib, reportedly 150 metres, but more likely around 110 metres or less. The boom and extension was apparently left up overnight and suffered damaged in the high winds and thunderstorms, which look to have ripped the boom away from the lift cylinder, causing the whole boom to buckle.

No one was hurt in the incident and damage was limited to the crane with a small amount of oil spilled.

The crane and its bungee jump platform was billed as the highest bungee jumping tower in Finland and had only been in operation for the past week or so. That’s all we know at this point, but will update when we learn more.

UPDATE

The crane recovery is now underway but is expected to take all weekend and possibly longer. The Finnish Meteorological service has confirmed that a strong electrical storm made a direct hit on the area on Friday evening with strong wind gusts.
