The men, all migrant labourers were being transported home at around 21:00 on Wednesday night in the back of the truck, when the top caught up in the boom nose of the crane which was leaving a work site. The crane, a Tadano Rough Terrain owned by contractor SSMC, had gone through the gates and pulled up at the junction with Wireless Road – close to the Japanese embassy. Its boom however was protruding into the street and caught up on the roof of the passing bus/truck ripping the entire bus module off the back with all nine men inside.
