Steil takes first Tadano GTC-1800EX

German crane rental company Steil Kranarbeiten has taken delivery of the world’s first 156 tonne Tadano GTC-1800EX telescopic crawler crane which was launched last October – see: Tadano GTC-1800EX telecrawler ready for launch.

The GTC-1800EX features a six section 60 metre boom plus a five to 23 metre hydraulic luffing extension to offer a 85 metre maximum tip height. Its tracks can be extended asymmetrically to any position from 3.5 to six metres with the crane’s intelligent control system automatically calculating the load chart depending on the track configuration, slop and slew angle.

Maximum counterweight is 45 tonnes on the superstructure and 15 tonnes on the carbody, while its maximum operating weight is just under 150 tonnes. Tadano claims that it has the best tractive effort in its class, with a true gradeability of 50 percent. It also has load charts for working on slopes of up to four degrees, at which it can handle 34 tonnes at a 12 metre radius with 30 metres of boom.

Power comes from a six cylinder Stage V/Tier 4 Final Mercedes, while features include the ability to pick & carry its full load chart, travel at speeds of up to 2.3kph, dual winches, a ground clearance of 420mm and a tilting cab. The new crane will be primarily used to assist the company’s 650 tonne Demag CC 3800 on wind turbine projects as well as for prefabricated concrete installation work.

Steil general manager, Birgit Steil, said: “We expect, first and foremost, to save a lot of time and money with the GTC 1800EX. Especially because of the short setup times and the logistical advantages when it comes to transportation. Since the crane is also very versatile, we’ll be using it primarily at work sites with tight space conditions and on difficult terrain. With its intelligent IC 1 Plus control system, it has the advantage that it automatically determines the available lifting capacity under consideration of factors such as ground inclination and the track setting.”

Tadano product manager, Vincent Stenger, added: “With the GTC 1800EX, we have put an enormously powerful and competitive crawler crane on the market. We are so confident in our development approach and the corresponding results to date that we’re currently working on a roadmap in Germany to bring additional GTC models to market. We are coordinating this with the Tadano GTC product line, which is developed in the USA.”

Established in 1924, Steil runs a fleet of more than 115 cranes with capacities ranging from 30 to 1,000 tonnes from six locations across Germany.
