Big JMG for Merritts

UK based heavy moving company Joseph Merritt Group has expanded its lifting fleet with a new 58 tonne all electric JMG MC 580 pick & carry crane, which joins a recently purchased 27 tonne Versa-Lift 40/60 heavy duty forklift.

The JMG MC 580 has a 12.1 metre three section boom which provides 7.1 metre reach beyond the front of the chassis, at which point it can lift between 7.6 and 13.6 tonnes depending on the configuration. Drive is via dual AC direct electric wheel drive motors, powered by a 96 volt 1,550Ah battery pack. The rear wheels turn a full 90 degrees in either direction allowing the machine to virtually rotate in position. Overall width is 2.35 metres with an overall length of just under six metres. The crane has an all up weight of 39 tonnes, although 12 tonnes of counterweight can be removed for transport. Total cost was £400,000.

Merritts will make the crane available for long or short term rental with a fully trained operator, although it will be mainly be used within its machinery moving business.

Director Richard Merritt said: “Over recent months, we have experienced a significant increase in demand for heavy machinery moving services from ‘clean’ industries such as food and pharmaceutical manufacturing where hygiene and cleanliness are of paramount importance. We also expect demand to be high for long term hire in key sectors such as aerospace, defence, machine tools and nuclear.”

“JMG electric pick & carry cranes are state of the art. The crane’s unique componentry enables it to perform tasks which would otherwise require larger and more expensive lifting equipment, and its compact dimensions allow access to congested factory sites with ease.”

Family owned Joseph Merritt is based in a fully equipped storage and bonded warehouse facility in Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottingham. The company was established in 1922 and currently employs 45.
