Arborist electrocuted

A tree worker has died after he came into contact with overhead power lines while working from an aerial work platform in Belfast, Northern Ireland on September 30th.

The man, Rodney Shirley, 36, was trimming trees for a local tree care company when he either touched or came too close to an overhead power line. He was rushed to hospital where he lapsed into a coma and died later from his injuries.

He leaves behind a wife and four children, the youngest of which is just 11 weeks old. The police service of Northern Ireland is investigating the incident alongside the Health and Safety Executive.

Update April 12. 2024

Christopher Auld, 40, has been charged with the manslaughter of Rodney Shirley and with breaching health and safety legislation, in that he failed to ensure, “as was reasonably practicable, the health and safety of all your employees.” In court he entered not guilty pleas to both offences

The case weas due to be held in Septmber 2023, but the defence told the court that in preparation for the trial of such a “complex case,” it would seek expert reports from an electrical engineer as well as a health and safety expert. A hearing is now scheduled for June 14th when a new trial date, will be set. It may then be delayed until November.
