22 Konecranes for Savannah

The US Port of Savannah - Georgia Ports Authority - has placed an order with Konecranes for seven Ship to Shore cranes and 15 Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes.

The order is Konecranes’ second largest ever. Delivery of the 15 RTGs will be completed by August 2023, while the seven ship to shore units will not be delivered until mid 2025.

The Port of Savannah has the single largest and fastest growing container terminal in the USA. It is run by the Georgia Ports Authority which is expanding its operations with investments in new container handling capacity. Projects now underway will add 1.7 million TEUs (20ft equivalents) of annual capacity in a few months.

Konecranes RTG cranes working in Savannah

The ship to shore cranes will be equipped with snag prevention, anti-collision systems and cameras for the operators. They will bring Georgia Port’s fleet of Konecranes STSs to 42.

The 15 Gantry cranes on order are high performance, 16 wheel RTGs with a stacking height of 1-over-6 and will be supplied with cable reel systems for electric operation. They will also be equipped with Konecranes’ Active Load Control system, which prevents container sway and Konecranes’ Truconnect remote monitoring system. When delivered the new cranes will take the port authority’s fleet of Konecranes RTGs to 225 units.

Jussi Suhonen, vice president regional port sales for the Americas said: “The container cranes on order will be key to the GPA handling the increasing volumes and will support continued growth. The seven STS cranes can handle the world’s largest container vessels, with a lifting height of 50 metres and an outreach of 70 metres. They will be delivered as fully electric and carbon neutral, with a lifting capacity of 40 tonnes.”
