90t AT for Ghana road project

Inzag Germany has purchased a 90 tonne Liebherr LTM 1090-4.2 All Terrain crane for a road construction project in Ghana.

Inzag has been awarded the contract for the expansion of the 64 kilometre first section of the Eastern Corridor Road from the port city of Tema, near Accra, to Akosombo. Part of the N2 ‘Rehabilitation of the Eastern Corridor Road’ project, the First Section is the last and most complex of the eight contracts awarded. The contractor is currently in the process of setting up its on-site facilities.

The four axle LTM 1090-4.2 features a 60 metre main boom, plus a 9.5 to 16 metre bi-fold swingaway extension with manual offset to offer a maximum tip height of just under 80 metres. Features include Liebherr’s VarioBase variable outrigger set up and remote control system, along with ECOdrive and ECOmode systems, which help improve fuel consumption, while reducing emissions and noise.

The new crane on board the ship enroute to Ghana

Purchasing manager Benjamin Knell said: "The new Liebherr LTM 1090-4.2 is being used during the mobilisation phase to set up the construction site. In addition, we will use the four axle crane for steel construction and prefabricated assembly. As an all-rounder, the 90-tonne mobile crane will be a key piece of equipment for the construction project. In addition, more cranes are needed on site, especially larger equipment for the heavy lifts."

The project

The 695km corridor traverses Greater Accra and Eastern, Volta, Oti, Northern and Upper East regions, connecting major towns such as Tema, Atimpoku, Asikuma Junction, Peki, Kpeve, Golokwati, Hohoe, Jasiken, Nkwanta, Bimbilla, Yendi, Gushiegu, Nakpanduri, Garu, Bawku and Kulungugu. The road will critically connect landlocked Burkina Faso to Tema, Ghana’s main port city. The contracts have been awarded in reverse order with the final section almost complete, while section five - the Jasikan- Dodo Pepesu Road - has been fully completed

Inzag managing director Achim Becker said: "The development of the first 64 kilometres section of the corridor, from the port town of Tema to Akosombo, is highly complex. Through the city, the road will be widened from two to six lanes. This will be followed by a section with a four lane expansion. Even further north, the road will have two lanes. Included in the project are roundabouts, flyovers and river crossings, as well as numerous pedestrian bridges."
