The C&A Top 10

The "Cranes & Access" annual survey of the largest hire fleets in the UK and Ireland shows that most of the biggest fleets have not grown in the last year and several have shrunk slightly.

The largest fleet of cranes in the UK is still owned by Hewden which has a C&A rating of 25,256 metres (this is obtained by adding together the maximum boom lengths of all cranes in the fleet). This compares to 26,860 metres the year before.

Nationwide still owns the largest fleet of access platforms in the British Isles, but again there has been some consolidation. Nationwide's C&A rating is 40,000 metres as compared to 45,720 metres in 2000.

Missing from this year's C&A Top 10 is Initial GWS which was bought by Ainscough. As a result, Ainscough's C&A rating has shot up from 9480 metres in 2000 to 24,577 metres this year. At the same time its fleet has increased in size from 237 units to 467 this year - the UK's largest fleet in terms of units.

The C&A Top 10 also looks at investment and reveals that Nationwide reports that it has invested £35.8 million on its UK fleet in the last 12 months. Its nearest rival is Hewden which spent £8 million. In the crane sector crawler crane specialist Weldex spent £16 million in the last 12 months while Ainscough spent £12 million and Baldwins spent £10 million on its UK fleet.
