Car park collapses under boom

The upper deck of a two storey parking garage collapsed yesterday in Windsor, Ontario as a man was driving a self propelled boom lift across it.

The scene from above - the yellow posts are the support pillars fro the collapsed floor.

The deck dropped around three metres but the operator was wearing a harness and remained with the machine – a Genie S series- straight telescopic boom, which stayed upright. He did suffer some minor injures we understand.

Thankfully there was no one on the ground floor and there were no further injuries. The cause of the collapse is not known, but does clearly appear to be related to the weight of the boom lift which could easily weigh around 17 tonnes - or more depending on which model it is.

perhaps should have used a low weight machine..
