New commercial director for Michelin

Michelin has appointed Mike Wilson, 61, as commercial director of its earthmover and industrial tyre operations in the UK and Ireland.

Wilson has spent 37 years with Michelin, in a career which began in 1974 when he joined the company as a sales representative. After eight years based in the Manchester area he progressed to a sales manager in Ireland, before returning to the UK and holding a number of posts including sales manager for government contracts followed by a similar position within Michelin’s mileage contracts division.

Since 1995 he has been responsible for the sales and marketing of all Michelin retread tyre products – plus for the last four years has managed the company’s End of Life Tyres programme -Michelin as the largest producer of retread tyres in the UK.

Wilson will head up a team of three key account managers, supported by six regional earthmover and industrial specialists. He will also work closely with UK-based manufacturers Caterpillar and JCB, for which Michelin is a tier one supplier.

Wilson said: “My new position encompasses an extensive portfolio – from industrial tyres for materials handling equipment used in a typical warehouse environment to the largest earthmover tyres for heavy-duty quarry operations.”

“It’s also a very interesting time to be transferring to this side of the business. Worldwide demand for earthmover tyres is rising, despite the economic climate, so we have to manage our supply accordingly. One of my top priorities is to establish a wider footprint for the sale of Michelin industrial and earthmover products across the UK and Ireland.”

In addition to his full time position based at Michelin’s UK headquarters in Stoke-on-Trent, Wilson will continue to serve as president of the Tyre Recovery Association.
