Spotting the void

A reader in Texas spotted a power line maintenance team working in Corpus Christi earlier this week who appear oblivious to the meaning of underground voids.

A boom truck spotted in Corpus Christi, Texas


The crew were working with a good sized Manitex boom truck equipped with a work platform, one assumes that the power was all shut down and made safe of course. The machine was up off the road, yet cones had been placed to warn motorists to keep well clear – all very good and the outriggers were all fully extended - perfect...

The team using it were working on overhead power lines


...However whereas some underground voids can be a challenge to spot in this case they were very clearly visible, as the large storm drain openings gave the game away. Our team clearly do not understand the relevance of placing outrigger legs over a void - and set up right on top.

In the words of our correspondent: “Spotted this morning in Corpus Christi, Texas at about 11:00 local time. Someone does not understand ground pressure with outrigger jacks and storm water drains. I contacted company office and expressed safety concerns.”

If you did not spot it already the unit was set up right on top of a clearly visible storm drain - hardly a hidden void!


One assumes that this time these guys got away with it… and hopefully their employer has taken steps to avoid such stupid risks going forward? A definite one for our Death Wish series.
