Southern takes UK first

UK rental company Southern Cranes and Access has taken delivery of the UK’s first 130 tonne Liebherr LTM 1130 5.1 All Terrain crane to feature the company’s Variable Supporting Base technology.

The system measures the position and the support forces exerted on each individual outrigger, this information is then used to calculate and set the available lifting capacities for the actual outrigger set up and counterweight installed.

Clive Sadler, managing director of Southern Cranes, said: “The Variable Supporting Base makes the LTM1130 significantly more versatile and increases the working radius of the crane in restrictive environments where outriggers cannot be fully extended. The use of the technology leads to improved levels of safety during lifting operations, with the crane operator knowing exactly how much weight can be lifted in any given circumstance. It also offers us a greater flexibility to offer our customers the ability to plan lifts in previously difficult or dangerous environments.”
