Mammoet has supplied its new MTC-15 terminal crane to the port of Güiria, Venezuela turning it into a temporary Heavy Lift Terminal.
Güiria saw its need for heavy lifting increase after the Venezuelan National Oil Company PDVSA built a new power plant 20km inland. The addition of the MTC-15 has added considerable crane capacity to the small port, making it possible to bypass the nearest heavy lift facilities at the port of Trinidad and transport the power station modules and materials directly to Güiria.
By not having to use Trinidad - where the materials would have had to be re-loaded from the vessel onto several smaller barges - Mammoet has saved a considerable amount of time and resources.
Main contractor Elecnor has tasked Mammoet to transport a total of 40,000 freight tonnes consisting of four turbines, four generators and general cargo. The installation of the turbines and generators will also be handled by Mammoet.

The MTC-15’s load moment capacity is equal to a 600-750 metric tonne crawler crane making it suited for loading and offloading heavy items such as columns, vessels, reels, project cargo and engines without the need to reinforce the quay.
The first shipment of two turbines, two generators and general cargo have just arrived in Venezuela from their departure ports in Europe and the USA. Mammoet is currently in the process of offloading the materials from the seagoing vessel MV Jetstreamn onto trailers and transporting them to their final destination at the construction site Juan Manuel Valdez.
Unveiled last October, the MTC-15 is a fully-containerised heavy lifting device developed specifically to provide general ports with heavy lift capabilities in a matter of days. Mobilisation and demobilisation of the MTC-15 is very rapid and efficient and it can be operated in any port capable of receiving containers.
The MTC-15’s load moment capacity is equal to a 600-750 metric tonne crawler crane making it suited for loading and offloading heavy items such as columns, vessels, reels, project cargo and engines without the need to reinforce the quay, further adding to its speed of deployment and cost-effectiveness.
