Skyjacks for Bonhams

Bonhams, the fine art auctioneer has purchased two 16ft Skyjack SJ16 self-propelled mast type lifts for its flagship salesroom in London.

The lifts will be used to help work on displays in the galleries, including lighting and picture hanging etc… The sales rooms have a ceiling height of six metres, making it ideal for the SJ 16s which offers a working height of 6.8 metres. The machines were supplied through Rapid Platforms and are generally used intensively around two days a week for setting up and dismantling, but are also used in between sales for lighting adjustment and more general tasks.

The company has trained five of its staff on the safe use of the lifts, which include the 410mm traversing deck. The units were delivered in a Bonham colours in order to blend in with the show room setting and for when they are working in the galleries.

Gallery manager Tim Kearley, said: “We chose the Skyjacks for their ease of use, quick set up and excellent manoeuvrability, which makes navigating around priceless artwork a less scary prospect. The fact we can move around the gallery at height saves time during set ups, so we meet our deadlines. The simple controls make it easy to use, even for people who don’t normally operate this type of machinery.”
