Manitou joins UN Global Compact

Manitou has become a member of the United Nations Global Compact signing up to the initiatives 10 principles covering human rights, working conditions, the environment and fighting corruption.

As a member the company has committed to report the actions it has taken and the results it has obtained relating to the implementation of the 10 principles.
Initiated by the previous secretary general Kofi Annan, 8,000 companies from 145 countries have now signed the Compact, making it the largest international voluntary initiative in the field of corporate social responsibility.

The objective of this initiative is to integrate the 10 universally recognised principles into company strategies and activities.

The 10 principles are:

Human Rights
Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights.
Principle 2: Make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labour
Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining.
Principle 4: The elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour.
Principle 5: The effective abolition of child labour.
Principle 6: The elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment
Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges.
Principle 8: Undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility.
Principle 9: Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-Corruption
Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

Manitou chief executive Michel Denis said: "We are convinced that sustainable growth and responsibility are inseparable, and that the 10 principles of the Global Compact represent a great base for Manitou to grow in this regard. This membership strengthens our commitment to integrating these principles into our strategy, our culture, our operations and the interactions with our stakeholders".
