Have your say
If you are an IPAF member you can contribute to a new standard being developed covering the safe loading and unloading of aerial lifts.
The move, initiated by the IPAF UK country council, came as a result of the accident statistics showing that over a third of all accidents with aerial work platforms are related to delivery drivers. So the council decided that a good best practice guide to safe unloading and loading might help raise awareness and help reduce he number of accidents. Members can check out the latest drafts of the documents and add comments to help improve and refine them.
Two draft documents are:–
1) A Load/Unload Best Practice Guide (draft two)
2)Load/Unload on the Public Highway (draft two)

A good start would be to review your fleet choices, having equipment purposefully designed to include such dynamics as transport and depot stowage should be part of your purchasing strategy. The "if it ain't broke don't fix it" philosophy is not only ignorant, it endangers lives. Look more closely at the dimensions of the kit you own, why choose products that are either as wide or wider than your vehicles, innovation moves at a fast pace and there are many new compact MEWP's still offering equal or better height/outreach and performance than the established choices, they are lighter too, saving MPG and allowing more kit to carried. Big is not always better and it's certainly not necessary, determining the occupational risks associated with transporting MEWP's needs a holistic approach and equipment choice determines your vehicle requirements, the right kit, transported on more roomy vehicles equals safer, more cost effective business. This is only possible of course if you want it? Odds are those who sign the cheques don't even know what a MEWP looks like? just as long as there's a healthy kick back for them.
