Liebherr opens new facility
Liebherr has opened a new, 60 million Euro, maritime cargo handling production facility in the port of Rostock, north-eastern Germany and is already planning further expansion.
On the site measuring 226,000 square metres Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH has completed two production halls and an administration block together occupying a total of some 56,000 square metres.
And since the current demand for harbour mobile and ship cranes is so great, there are already plans to extend. The site for a third production hall has already been prepared and will manufacture harbour mobile cranes, ship cranes up to 500 tonnes, offshore cranes and special-purpose cranes.
“The decision for Rostock was easy for us”, confirmed Isolde Liebherr at the opening ceremony. "The infrastructure has proven so good that production could be launched several months ahead of schedule. The plant is growing faster than expected with the workforce including temporary personnel totaling more than 300. It is planned that staff numbers will increase fairly rapidly to between 400 - 500."
Willy Liebherr, Isolde’s brother, confirmed the positive figures: “We are glad to have settled here.”
The market for mobile and ship cranes is booming at the moment. The Liebherr Group has about 1,500 employees in the maritime cargo handling equipment sector at production sites in Nenzing (Austria), Killarney, Sunderland, and Rostock. No changes will be made to the sites or employee numbers in Austria, Ireland and the UK.
