New JCB telehandler and dual technology transmission

JCB has unveiled a new 4,000kg/17.5 metre telehandler - the 540-180 HiViz - along with new dual technology transmission telescopic handlers combining the best characteristics of powershift and hydrostatic drives.

The 540-180 offers 800mm more lift height than the 16.7 metre 540-170 but is significantly more compact. At just 2.35 metres wide with an overall length of 6.26 metres it is possible to transport two machines on a single curtain sided truck or low loader, to reduce transport costs.

As well as the increased lift height, the new telehandler has a slightly larger reach of 13.5 metres and can lift 2,500kg to full height. Weighing 11,330kg it is seven percent lighter than the 540-170, mainly through the use of a strengthened four-stage, chain driven boom and improved chassis construction.

A regenerative Smart Hydraulic system on the optional single lever control uses gravitational force to help with the lower and retract functions which also reduces energy required during the operation. The boom uses a new chain adjustment system for reduced maintenance which also and lower hydraulic pump capacity.

Powered by a JCB SmartPower Tier 4 Final EcoMAX diesel - which does not require a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) additive - it drives through a four-speed Powershift transmission giving a maximum travel speed of 29kph and is said to be 10 percent more fuel efficient.

One of the features of the new machine is a lower boom pivot point for improved visibility over the boom. JCB says that with the low-maintenance boom design, no DPF and 500 hour service intervals, the 540-180 has a best-in-class SAE service rating, offering a 50 percent service cost saving over a 1,000 hour operating period. The machine is also equipped as standard with JCB’s LiveLink telematic system and an immobiliser.

Industrial DualTech VT transmission

JCB has also unveiled what it says it the world’s first dual technology transmission - the Industrial DualTech VT. The new transmission is said to combine the best characteristics of powershift and hydrostatic drives and has been developed by JCB’s own engineering team. It has been installed in three Industrial DualTech VT telescopic handlers - the 531-70, the 535-95 and the 541-170.

The key features of the Industrial DualTech VT transmission include fully hydrostatic drive providing stepless speed control up to a speed of 19kph when it automatically switches to electronically-modulated three-speed powershift to the maximum of 40kph for more efficient high speed travel. All three models use the 4.8-litre JCB EcoMAX engine.

JCB has launched a dual technology transmission - the Industrial DualTech VT

JCB chief engineering and innovation officer Tim Burnhope said: “Industrial DualTech VT truly provides the best of both worlds, combining the low-speed controllability and easy driving characteristics of hydrostatics with the higher speed efficiency of direct drive powershift. The result is a machine that is up to 25 percent more productive than competitive models. Drawing on our expertise in both hydrostatic and powershift transmissions, Industrial DualTech VT is a massive achievement for our design and engineering team, who have raised driveline technology to new heights.”
