Grove cranes for US Army

Manitowoc has won a $28.2 million contract to provide 53 tonne Grove GMK4060HC All Terrain cranes to the US Army.

The four axle cranes feature a 7.9 to 32.9 metre six section boom with a 3.9 metre swingaway extension. They have been designed to meet the US Army’s specific requirements, including the ability to ford water up to 1.2 metres and operate in harsh conditions, as such the cranes will be painted with chemical agent resistant coatings to cope with the effects of nuclear or chemical weapon fallout. They will also be equipped with fully armoured cabs and military specification lighting that allows cranes to operate in a blackout light condition when using night vision technologies.

The GMK4060HC cranes will are being ordered for use in extreme areas, including war zones, on tasks such as constructing barriers, setting up areas of operation, bridge building and vehicle towing. They will be delivered over the next 15 months.

Manitowoc director of government marketing Darryl Mellott said: “It’s a great honour to be able to provide cranes for the US Army. Our first contract was signed in 2015, and we are glad to see that our cranes have performed well and serve the Army’s needs. We designed and built the machines directly to the Army’s specifications and created the GMK4060HC, which is perfectly suited for its bridging and support operations around the world. These are very versatile cranes that will enable the Army to perform the lifts it needs for a wide variety of applications. These tough, durable cranes reflect what it means to be ‘Army strong,’ and we’re proud to support our military, no matter where the battle is.”
