450t for Sommer
German crane rental company Sommer Kranverleih has taken delivery of a 450 tonne Liebherr LTM 1450-8.1 All Terrain crane.
Replacing a 400 tonne crane in the company’s fleet, the eight axle LTM 1450-8.1 features an 85 metre main boom plus up to 84 metres of luffing jib and features the company's Variobase outrigger set up and VarioBallast counterweight systems. It can travel within 12 tonne axle loads complete with main boom, outriggers and winch, but has also been supplied with the option to remove either sections of its main boom or the entire boom, in order to further reduce axle loads.
The new crane went sent straight to work on the Vier Berge wind farm in Saxony-Anhalt. Fitted with a 21 metre heavy duty extension - offset at 10 degrees - and 34 tonnes of counterweight, it installed cables for bracing the concrete towers at a height of more than 100 metres and a radius of 24 metres.

Sommer managing director Björn Sommer, said: “The new LTM 1450-8.1 will replace a 400 tonne crane and will hopefully also take the strain off our LTM 1500-8.1. The new crane’s 85 metre telescopic boom enabled us to set it up quickly and easily. My people at the site were delighted and reported that they required very little equipment to carry out the work. The VarioBase also enabled us to increase the lifting capacity by around 15 percent for this load.”
