Platform Hire takes lithium Snorkels

UK access rental company Platform Hire has taken delivery of the first two lithium-ion battery powered 39ft Snorkel S3970RTE Rough Terrain scissor lifts in the UK. Snorkel began production of its RTE range of battery powered Rough Terrain models in the past few weeks - see: All electric RTs from Snorkel.

Part of a larger order, the S3970RTEs offer a working height of 13.8 metres and a platform capacity of 350kg. Features include a 1.2 metre deck extension, non-marking tires, four wheel drive, an oscillating axle and four levelling jacks which can automatically level on side slopes of up to six degrees and longitudinal slopes of up to 10 degrees. Weighing 3,790kg, they offer an overall width of 1.8 metres, a length of 3.4 metres and a minimum height of 2.13 metres with the guardrails folded down.

Power comes from two 5.75kWh lithium-ion battery packs with a built in battery management system which, the company claims, delivers at least eight hours operation on a single charge. A high frequency 50 amp on-board smart charger fully recharges the batteries in eight hours and allows for top-up charging during breaks or shift changes.

Platform Hire managing director, Dave Williams, said: “The focus on reducing emissions and achieving net zero targets is increasing across the UK, and we are seeing more large construction contractors discussing the need for zero and low emission equipment solutions. We were impressed by the quality and reliability of the Snorkel lithium-ion battery solution during our trials. Additionally, when we calculated the savings in maintenance and fuel, even with a higher upfront purchase price, the return on investment is very attractive and we expect to see these units become very popular with our customers.”

Established in 2006, Platform Hire offers a range of access platforms and telehandlers for rent as well as used equipment and training from its location in Droitwich, west midlands.
