JCB to build second US plant

JCB is to build a new 67,000 square metre production facility on a 400 acre site in San Antonio, Texas. This will be the second JCB factory in the USA, joining the long established plant in Savannah, Georgia which opened in 2001. Construction will begin early in the new year.

The new facility is expected to employ up to 1,500 within five years, joining the 1,000 already employed by JCB in North America. The company has not yet revealed what products will be built at the new plant.

Chief executive Graeme Macdonald said: “North America is integral to the growth and success of JCB’s business in the future and the time is now right to expand our manufacturing presence there. Texas is a vibrant and growing economy, and the state offers great advantages in terms of a central location, as well as good highway and port access, The city of San Antonio also has a well established skills base, which makes it a very attractive place to set up a factory.”

JCB North America’s president Richard Fox-Marrs added: “The growth we’ve experienced in the past few years has been extensive and demand for our products continues to grow. The decision to expand our manufacturing footprint will bring us even closer to our customers and will allow us to further capitalise on market opportunities in North America.”

JCB operates 22 production plants worldwide in the UK, India, Brazil, and China.
