Fatal boom train incident

A man died in Greensboro, North Carolina, yesterday after a colllision with an Amtrak train while driving a boom lift over a level crossing.

The local police confirmed that an incident had taklen place involving an Amtrak train and a boom lift belonging to demolition and recycling company DH Griffin boom, which has a yard alongside the tracks.

The lift, an articulated JLG boom lift was being driven by DH Griffin employee Margarito Alfonso-Cruz, 51. He had started to cross the tracks when the crossing lights and barriers were activated due to the oncoming train.

We understand that he attempted to reverse the machine back to safety, but the barrier came down on the lift and the train slammed into it taking it someway down the track. The news bulletins below tell more of the story, including the train drivers radio message, while the other shows the recovery underway.
Oh yes and the machine is referred to as crane or forklift – as usual.
