50 years of Liebherr mobile harbour cranes

This year marks 50 years since Liebherr launched its first mobile harbour crane, the LGM 1130 which it unveiled in 1974 and was notable for its folding tower design, which allowed for versatility in container handling to cope with the rapid growth in containerisation.

Over the year's key new models have also played important roles in taking the company's products in this sector forward. They include the LHM 250, introduced in 1996, which introduced improvements in efficiency, with advanced telemetry for remote monitoring. It was followed by the LHM 500 in 2002, which had an early emphasis on environmental sustainability, while the LHM 550, introduced in 2010, integrated digital technologies and automation, all of which were developed in response to changing market demands.

More recent advancements include Liebherr's first all electric portal crane, the LPS 420 E in 2019, designed for high efficiency operations, and the new LHM series launched in 2022 following a push towards sustainability with advanced automation, for data driven logistics while all crane functions - luffing, hoisting, slewing, and travelling -are driven by electric motors.

Other innovations such as SmartGrip (2014), Sycratronic (2004) and Pactronic (2010) have further enhanced the cranes’ logistical capabilities. SmartGrip optimises grab filling rates, Sycratronic improves tandem operations, and Pactronic uses hybrid technology to boost performance and reduce emissions.

Product manager Sebastian Simon said: “Over the years, Liebherr has continuously adapted to market demands, introducing groundbreaking models that have had an impact on port operations. Our commitment to innovation and quality has made us a trusted partner in the maritime industry.”

Andreas Ritschel, general manager of sales for mobile harbour cranes added: “The goals for the next half century are clear: continuous technical enhancements of the cranes, swift adaptation to new developments, and maintaining the agility of a family owned business with short decision making pathways. Reliability remains a cornerstone, both in the products and the service expansion. With 50 years of experience in mobile harbour cranes, Liebherr is poised to remain an industry leader for the next 50.”
