with a new office building adding a further 700 square meters, the next stage is an additional production unit. Last year the company shipped around 300 units and had revenues of €16 million.

Platform Basket was born in October 2005, following the takeover of Basket by the current owners the Scillia family. Basket was previously a division of Italmec and manufactured spider lifts as well as self-propelled boom lifts which it marketed under the Sel brand but had gone through a period where its reputation had suffered badly following a number of incidents leading to reputational and financial problems.

The Scillia family already owned TMC, (Torneria Meccanica e Carpenteria) which was set up in 1973, as Fratelli Scillia converting to TMC in 1977, a machining and fabrication shop, supplying steel components and fabrications to local equipment producers such as Linde forklifts, Dieci telehandlers, and loader cranes from Amco Veba, PM and F.lli Ferrari. The family decided to buy out Basket in order to invest in their own range of products to be marketed in Italy and worldwide.

In March 2006, after trying to run the new platform business alongside TMC, managing director Carmelo Scillia hired Carlo Molesini as managing director of Platform Basket. He had previously spent 23 years with the loader crane company Ferrari, which had been a customer of course. And the rest, as they say, is history.
