Crane on Cranes

A crane collapsed onto a house in Merritt Island, Orlando, Florida last Wednesday - August 13th.

The four axle Liebherr All Terrain from the Big Iron Crane rental fleet was installing large telephone poles in the area. It had set up in front of the house, which belonged to Mr and Mrs Crane – yes really!

It is hard to know how the outriggers were set as it looks as at least two have retracted – or were never extended. The crane’s six section main boom was almost fully extended, and it had lifted a pole when water began spurting from under one of its rear outriggers, shortly afterwards the crane began to tip, it seems that the outrigger loading had crushed the water main and the resulting flood washed way the ground below creating an even larger void.
The rear outrigger jack broke the water main

Thankfully no was hurt in the incident, home owner Jim crane was outside watching the lift with some trepidation, while his wife was out at the time.

Representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and telecoms company AT&T carried out an inspection of the scene and will issue a report.
