Hidden legs

UK based Mac's Truck Sales has developed a patented hidden front leg system for the Volvo FH Aero truck, that preserves the vehicle's aerodynamics while enabling 360 degree lifting charts.

The system - which took 18 months to engineer, test and produce - utilises a void behind the front grille and in the engine bay to integrate the equipment. Unlike conventional front loutrigger systems located in external housings, Mac's solution conceals the system with only the legs visible below the bumper line.

Mac's technical director Andrew Hall said: "You can't see the system; you can only see the legs peeking out from below the bumper line. The patented legs give better performance than anything else on the market. The new patented system doesn't interfere with the aerodynamics, which is what the Aero is all about, so there's no compromise on fuel efficiency or the look of the vehicle"

The system was demonstrated at an open day this month using a Fassi F990 crane with a four tonne load, showing stability and transition from rear to front zones during 360 degree operation.

The company says the Volvo FH Aero has been designed to increase efficiency by up to five percent compared to standard models through improved aerodynamics and fuel consumption. The first vehicle with the system fitted is pre-sold and entering the body build and crane fit stage.

Mac's Truck Sales was founded in 1973 and employs more than 100 staff stocking around 500 trucks and chassis for commercial vehicle applications at its headquarters in Huddersfield.
