Dual crane fatality

A lattice crawler crane working on a dockside redevelopment in Everett on the north side of Boston, Massachusetts dropped its boom on Friday landing on and killing two men, said to be in their 30s and 40s.

A two were part of a crew that was in the process of demolishing old storage tanks at the obsolete Exxon oil terminal, when the incident occurred. One man was rescued relatively quickly and was rushed to hospital but died shortly after arrival. The other remained trapped and was declared dead at the scene. Subsequent reports have stated that collapse was due to a wire rope failure, either the boom luffing rope or a pendant.

The crane, a Manitowoc – by the look of it a classic 4100 - was being operated by subcontractors working for the main contractor Charter Contracting, the developer is joint venture Everett Landco.

A statement from Everett Landco said: “We are heartbroken by the tragic accident that occurred today. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives and to everyone affected by this incident. We are working closely with public safety officials and the contractors performing the work to gather information and understand what happened.”

The video below shows more from the scene. We will update this when we learn more.
