Another tree care shock

A man suffered serious life changing injuries after touching a power line while trimming trees in Anna, between Dayton and Toledo in Ohio, on Friday, October 30th.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Department has named the man as Billy Ray Kelly, 44, who was working with Jim Riley of Riley Construction to clear trees on a private property. Kelly was working from the platform of a boom lift and assumed that the power line was a simple tension/support cable.

The electric shock occurred when he grabbed hold of the 7,200 volt power line and received a serious shock. He managed to extract his hand after around 15 to 25 seconds of contact.

Kelly, a plumber/electrician by training, was rushed to the local hospital and from there airlifted to a hospital in Dayton, where his right arm was removed just below the shoulder, and his left arm just below the elbow. He was also treated for numerous serious exit wounds.

Shelby County sheriff, Jim Frye said: “This was a very bad incident, and this man is very lucky to still be breathing.”

An update a few days later stated that, while still in hospital, his condition was stable.

His daughter Marquese has set up a Go Fund Me page to raise funds towards the medical costs. Donations so far total $2,614. Click here to go to the page
