A large number of major websites and portals were affected today by an issue with Cloudflare servers, including Twitter/ X, Spotify, OpenAI, Amazon Web Services, ChatGPT and Vertikal.net. All went offline along with many others intermittently at times, with more than an hour’s break at one point.
Those trying to access the sites were shown the "internal server error" message. Others said, "Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed."
We are told that things are now back to normal.
In a statement, Cloudflare said that a "significant outage" occurred after a configuration file designed to handle threat traffic did not work as intended and "triggered a crash" in its software handling traffic for its wider services. "We apologise to our customers and the Internet in general for letting you down today. Given the importance of Cloudflare's services, any outage is unacceptable."
Cloudflare provides high level of internet security for websites like ours, checking incoming visits are coming from humans rather than bots or anything likely to be malicious. It is said that its security services are used by around 20 percent of all websites worldwide.
