German rental company SMS Autokrane has taken a new 80 tonne four axle Grove GMK4080L All Terrain crane. Its first job? a series of lifts at the manufacturer's Wilhelmshaven plant.
As soon as the official handover and industion training was completed, the crane travelled a few metres or so to its first job, replacing components weighing up to 500kg at a radius of around 30 metres for the on-site printing presses which produce Grove brochures and operating manuals etc...

The GMK4080L features a 60 metre, seven section main boom with an optional 8.7 to 15 metre bi-fold swingaway extension with up to 40 degrees of offset for a maximum tip height of 78 metres. It can carry up to 13.3 tonnes of its 19.1 tonne counterweight within 12 tonnes axle limits or achieve 10 tonnes axle loads with 5.2 tonnes of counterweight.

SMS managing director Michael Ammerbach said: “The new GMK4080L impressed us right from the start. SMS is based in Michelstadt to the south of Frankfurt, and runs All Terrain cranes up to 220 tonnes, along with a few telehandlers and aerial work platforms, alongside a heavy haulage fleet.
