Operator injured in crane overturn

A crane operator was seriously injured in a crane accident in Stallikon ZH, southwest of Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday morning. The man, 60, was thrown out of the cab of his six axle All Terrain crane, several reports say that he was thrown through the cab windscreen, although we have not managed to confirm that. The operator was airlifted to the hospital, where his condition remains serious.

The superstructure cab

The crane appears to have overturned rearwards while dismantling a tower crane with roughly two thirds of its eight section main boom extended. The crane must have gone over with some force, to the point that it looks as though the carrier cab became detached. There is still much we don’t know about this incident, and will update this item when we learn more.
The boom landed on what looks like a mobile generator pack

The incident is being investigated by the Zurich cantonal police, the Limmattal/Albis public prosecutor's office and the Forensic Institute of Zurich.

I'm wondering what circumstances led to this crane going over backwards so severely that not only did it go over but it appears the carrier cab and engine detached from the crane.

I know many times a crane goes over the counterweights will surrender to gravity and rotate the upper 180 degrees during the upset. Is it possible the crane was working over the back, an overload occurred and while tipping over the upper slewed around with the counterweights landing on the ground ?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Best wishes, thoughts and prayers to the operator for a full and speedy recovery.

The first time I've ever seen a crane go over so violently that the complete carrier comes away from the chassis, so this looks a bit strange. Hopefully the op makes a full recovery.
