Tower crane fatality in Hong Kong

A tower crane collapsed today in the Kwai Tsing District of Hong Kong, killing the operator.

The incident occurred at a major multi-storey housing project around 16:30 local time - 9:30 Central European Time - the emergency services are still on the scene and investigating. It is far too early to comment on the cause, but the failure appears to have occurred in the upper tower sections, causing the top to break away.
The falling crane apparently struck a vehicle - reportedly a truck - when part of the jib landed in the street. So far, there have been no reports of further fatalities apart from the crane operator, 62.

The debris of the falling crane has been scattered across the Tai Wo Hau road, which has now been closed. Following the incident, the contractor, Woon Lee Construction, suspended all work at the site and is working with the authorities investigating the causes of the incident.
