Fatal load drop

A man died yesterday when he was struck by a load that dropped from an overhead crane in Carol Stream, on the west side of Greater Chicago.

The incident occurred at a warehouse operated by S&S International/Speciality Rolled Metals. The man, 55, was helping load a roll of aluminium sheet metal onto a truck when, according to initial reports, a sling failed, later reports suggested the crane had failed. The categoric facts have yet to be confirmed, but the police, the local coroner and OSHA are investigating the incident.

As to the weight of the coil, it was said to be 21.5 tonnes/48,000lbs, but that is the weight of a large stainless steel coil – but whether it's 3,000kg or 22,000kg, both are likely to prove fatal.

We will update if and when we learn more.
