Twin crane failure

A boom truck placing termite fumigation tenting onto the roof of a newly renovated house in Fort Lauderdale overturned onto the building yesterday when the front load side outrigger jack gave way, possibly dropping into a void.
The first crane overturned after an outrigger gave way

The crane’s owner, Cooper Cranes, sent in a second crane, a larger boom truck /truck crane, to recover the first one. The crew hitched a sling midway up the boom of the fallen crane and began lifting. It had its five section boom fully extended for the lift. As it got underway, the base section of the recovery crane's boom buckled and came down onto the roof - in a different place. Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident, and the house was unoccupied.

The CBS news bulletin below shows the second failure as it happened.

As of last night, the truck crane had been recovered, and crews are working today on the boom truck. The homeowners were preparing to reoccupy the house, following a full renovation that has taken months to complete.

The crane job/recovery job were both doomed from the start. They scream inexperience and ineptitude. Setting the first boom truck up on pavers with minimal matting was just plain foolish. Bringing in a larger boom truck that was obviously too small was idiotic. And I'd bet money the larger boom truck's computer/LMI was in overide or rig/travel mode. Hence the boom collapse.

All in all, a very expensive lesson of how NOT to operate cranes.
