7 storey fall in a skid steer

A man died yesterday in Chicago after the skid steer loader he was operating fell seven storeys to the ground. Reports vary on what actually happened, one local news paper says that the man, Carlos Mayroja, rode the machine up to the seventh floor as it was hoisted into place by a lattice boomed truck crane and that something gave way causing the loader to drop.

The most likely report however is the one that said he was waiting on the seventh floor for the skid steer to be raised into position. The machine was placed on the edge of the floor of the building which was being demolished. The slings were removed and he inadvertently selected reverse rather than forward- sending the machine over the edge.
