Manitou and Gehl merge telehandler lines for US market

Manitou, the French aerial platform and telescopic handler producer, and Gehl, the US producer of compact agricultural and construction equipment, have joined forces to allow each firm to offer certain models from the other firm’s telescopic handler line as part of its own range in the US.

Under the first of two agreements, Gehl will manufacture two series from Manitou’s compact telehandler line under licence for the agricultural and construction markets.

A second OEM supply agreement will give either company the opportunity to dip into the others product pool to complete its own telehandler range for distribution throughout the US.

Each firm will sell the machines through their respective US distribution networks - ammounting to 341 dealers in the case of Gehl - under its own name and livery.

Scheduled to become fully operational by 2005, it is hoped that the deal will boost Manitou’s presence in the US by offering a complete range of telehandlers to the construction market, and provide Gehl with access to a complete telehandler range.

Manitou has also purchased shares in Gehl amounting to 14.9 per cent of the outstanding common stock for $19,8 million (UK£10.8 million).
