Moog to India

A new Moog underbridge inspection platform has been commissioned on India’s largest cable stayed bridge.

The unit, a model MBL 1600, mounted on a right hand drive four axle Volvo chassis with extra floating axle, was purchased for the Naini Bridge in Allahabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The bridge connects Allahabad with National Highway 27 over the Yamuna River.

The new lift spreads its booms

The bridge has been operational since 2005 and the requirement for detailed inspections of the underside of the bridge, has 'kicked-in' as part of the agreed maintenance contract. The Moog is intended not only for the inspections, but also to carry out any remedial work as and when it is required.

The machines shows off its reach

The MBL 1600 was modified to span the bridge’s extra wide sidewalk, which at 5.3 metres is, according to the company, the widest ever ‘over-bridged’ by a mobile under-bridge lift.
The lift, which has an end mounted 1.35 x 1.25 metre platform with a 280kg capacity, has a horizontal reach under the bridge of 16 metres, a working height of 21.8 metres and a lowering depth of 19.7 metres below the bridge.

The large working envelope therefore allows the machine to access all vital parts of the bridge, both above and below deck..

A main challenge for the lift design was being able to erect and operate the machine through the tightly spaced cables which run at an angle of 24 degrees. The erection process had to be simulated by Moog engineers before the customer made his decision to purchase the machine.

This unit has two rotation points, one on the base tower and the other one between the main and vertical boom.

The machine can either be run via the truck’s PTO or from the on-board diesel generator, which also provides power to the outlets located in the basket. A four metre long working platform which can be mounted onto the third boom and a traffic control trailer were also included.

The main platform is a two to three man basket, but an additional working platrform can be fitted to the 'bucket boom'

Fantastic piece of kit, but the pictures clearly show no harness protection for the operator or the inspectors????
