Crane jib collapse causes evacuation

A damaged crane on a job site near Stanstead airport in Essex, UK, caused police to evacuate around 40 people yesterday evening.

According to reports from the area a Jost hydraulic luffing tower crane lost part of its jib, which was left swinging by its hoist rope. With strong winds in the region there was concern that the crane or parts of the crane might come down on the occupied tower block in Saffron Walden.

Those evacuated were allowed to return to their homes in time for Christmas and the contractor, Stone and MacCarthy who also, we believe, owns the crane, arranged for it to be dissmantled.
