Injury prevents record run

Crane operator Michael Brown has been forced to end his charity run from John O’Groats to Lands End.

Last Monday, 72 hours into the record attempt and having completed 271 miles, Brown was forced to halt the run due to a compound fracture to his right tibia (shin bone). Originally it was thought to have been a shin splint however over time the pain began to increase affecting the pace needed to complete the attempt.

Brown said: “Injuries are something I do not get very often, in fact it has been 20 years since I last had a running injury. Initially it slowed me down and as it worsened it began to create other issues. As I was not running correctly I was spending more and more time working on blisters and minor muscle damage.”

It was not until the 280 mile point that Brown dropped below the pace needed to break the record and made the decision to call off the event after conceding that he was unable to improve his pace.

Fortunately the swelling has already subsided and he has begun training on a static bike, with the hope of being able to run in the coming weeks. If all goes well a third attempt will be scheduled for September. Hopefully it will be third time lucky!

Running well before being dealt a cruel blow

Brown would like to thank everyone for the tremendous support shown throughout and would like to extend a further thank you to those who have put themselves out to assist in the organisation and smooth running of the first stage of the event.

In the meantime if anyone needs a good tower crane operator he is looking for a job.
