Shires celebrates 40 years
UK regional crane rental company Shires Crane Hire has celebrated 40 years in the crane business.
Based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Shires Crane Hire was founded by equipment rental man David Shires in 1972 after buying a crane on impulse from his previous employer. Shires originally operated from the family home before moving to its current larger premises.
Since then the company has expanded and now owns a fleet topped by a 100 tonner. It also buys and sells used cranes as well as offering a repair and testing service. As with many companies in the sector Shires is struggling with the effects of the ongoing recession but, having survived the three recessions in its 40 years, it is hoping it will continue on to celebrate a further 40 years!

Louise Sargeant, David Shires daughter, said: “Crane hire was not the direction my dad originally intended, he was visiting an old employer and saw a crane in the yard and on impulse said, I’ll buy it!”
